The rush of the holidays can unfortunately lead to some negative consequences for retail employees. While the majority of shoppers come and go without incident, the swarms of people can lead to injury and other perils. As such, it is important to protect your business during the seasonal rush with Virginia Retail Insurance.
A major component of employee and patron safety is crowd control. According to Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Assistant Secretary Dr. David Michaels, “Crowd control is critical to preventing injuries and deaths. These incidents can be prevented by adopting a crowd management plan, and this fact sheet provides retail employers with guidelines for avoiding injuries during the holiday shopping season,” he states, referencing OSHA’s safety pamphlet.
In order to ensure safety, crowd monitors should be placed by entry ways. According to EHS Today, safety plans should include having trained security personnel or police officers on-site, setting up barricades or rope to regulate lines of people, and an emergency plan to address potential dangers that may arise.
In addition, retail managers should not allow more people to enter once it has reached its maximum capacity. Otherwise, emergency exits and entry ways are more likely to be blocked, causing safety hazards.
Some other tips to recommend to your employees include:
-Wear comfortable attire and shoes.
-Take all the breaks that are permitted. It is important to unwind and relax in a quiet area whenever possible.
-Acknowledge customers in line if they are busy assisting other customers to avoid discrepancies or testing others’ patience.
