Virginia Car Insurance: National Auto Thefts Drop Virginia Car Insurance National Auto Thefts Drop

New analysis released by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) offers some great news for Virginia motorists. According to FBI crime figures, there were just under 700,000 vehicles reported stolen last year. While this number might seem alarmingly high at first glance, it is important to notes that as of 2012 federal data there are over 254 million registered vehicles in the United States. In fact, while vehicle ownership and registration rates have risen in the last few years, the actual number of vehicle thefts has been on the decline for over two decades.

According to the NICB report, there has been a 58 percent reduction in the number of auto thefts across the U.S. when compared to the numbers from twenty years ago. Data indicates that auto theft rates reached the highest historic levels in 1991 when some 1.7 million vehicle thefts occurred across America. While not yet back to the record low levels seen back in the 1960’s, current auto theft rates have been steadily decreasing over the last two decades while the number of vehicles on the road has been more rapidly increasing. Today roughly 80 percent of Americans have at least one vehicle registered in their name.

For many years, as the population and number of vehicles on the road grew, so did the risk of having those vehicles stolen. Between the 1960s and the 1990s the auto theft rate skyrocketed. At times auto theft was so prevalent that law enforcement created specialized task forces devoted to auto theft investigations and vehicles recovery. Unfortunately, the majority of vehicles went unrecovered and many criminals were never apprehended.

Over the years the implementation of anti-theft, GPS, vehicle recovery and other technologies has had a dramatic helped to reduce auto theft rates and improve vehicles recovery. As such, today, motorists have a significantly lower chance of losing their cars to theft; however the risks do still exist and as such it is important to be prepared.
